Kabarilal CGPA Guide

SGPA vs CGPA: Semester Performance vs Cumulative Performance

SGPA focuses on a shorter academic period; CGPA combines performance across multiple periods. The math is straightforward, but credit weighting and university rules still matter.

What SGPA represents

SGPA usually means Semester Grade Point Average. It summarizes the courses included in one semester or term. This makes it useful for seeing how you performed in a specific academic period.

What CGPA represents

CGPA usually means Cumulative Grade Point Average. It combines performance from more than one semester and is often used as the broader indicator of academic progress.

Because it includes more coursework, CGPA generally changes less sharply than a single semester result.

Do not always average SGPAs equally

If every semester carries the same total credits, a simple average of SGPAs may match the cumulative result. When semester credits differ, a credit-weighted calculation is more appropriate.

For example, an 8.0 SGPA over 20 credits and a 9.0 SGPA over 24 credits produce a weighted result of about 8.55 rather than 8.50.

Rules that can change the official number

Repeated courses, failed courses, pass/fail subjects, internships and transfer credits may be treated differently by different universities. Rounding policies can also affect the displayed CGPA.
