ATAR vs CGPA: Why They Are Not Directly Comparable
ATAR and CGPA describe academic performance in fundamentally different ways. One is a rank used in an admissions context; the other is usually a grade-point average.
ATAR is a rank, not a GPA
ATAR is designed to indicate a student’s relative position for tertiary admissions in Australia. It is not simply a percentage mark and should not be treated as a grade-point average.
CGPA is an average
CGPA normally summarizes grades or grade points across multiple courses or semesters. The exact scale can be 4, 5, 10 or another system depending on the institution.
Why a one-line conversion is unreliable
A percentile-style rank and a grade-point average measure different things. A direct formula that claims to turn any ATAR into any CGPA can ignore cohort ranking, subject scaling and institutional evaluation rules.
What to do for an application
If an institution asks for ATAR, GPA or a converted equivalent, follow its admissions instructions. International applicants may be assessed using country-specific credential rules rather than a public conversion formula.
